萝莉艾尔斯（乌比·戈德堡饰）是曼彻斯特投资公司里最才华洋溢、最精明干练的财务分析师，但是她的聪明才智却无法让她在华尔街这个由男人主宰的世界中出人头地。萝莉眼睁睁看着原本属于她的升职机会被狡猾的同事法兰克彼得森占去。气愤的萝莉辞去了工作，并决定抵押房子成立自己的公司。但在只有男人才能成名的华尔街，萝莉刚开始吃不少闭 门 羹，幸有曼彻斯特的老同事莎莉帮她安排与前公司的大主顾唐纳见面，为了进一步取得唐纳的信任，冲动的萝莉不惜吹嘘她的公司其实是由一位华尔街奇才罗勃特主持，并且还为「他」捏造了一个完美的经历。当萝莉所提的案子为唐纳带来大笔财富时，罗勃特顿时成为华尔街的焦点人物。萝莉为了让罗勃特消失，在庆功宴上宣布她将接手公司的业务，没想到投资者不信任她的能力，立刻引起不安。眼看事情的发展已经完全失控，萝莉只好安排投资人和这位其实不存在的老板见上一面…
