影片根据林露德的第一部同名传记小说改编而来，历史上确有其人，讲述了一个华人女子在18世纪美国西部淘金时期艰苦奋斗的故事。“千金”波莉·比米斯(Polly Bemis)原名纳顺·拉鲁（Lalu Nathoy），1853年出生于中国华北地区中蒙边界的一个农民家庭。为了生计，拉鲁的父亲被迫把她卖给了土匪，换回两袋种子。后来在美国拉鲁再次被人贩子以2500美元卖给爱达荷州沃伦(Warren)镇的一个华人小酒店主。最后白人查理·比米斯用玩扑克牌赌博的办法从酒店老板手里赢得了她。受过良好教育的比米斯是新英格兰名门之后，他给了波莉自由。不久，比米斯被一矿工用枪击中，是波莉用剃须刀把子弹挖出，救了他的性命。后来波莉和比米斯结了婚，两人在鲑鱼河(Salmon River) 边的峡谷底开辟了农场。波莉用她的中草药为孩子们治病，深受当地人们敬爱。波莉·比米斯于1933年在美国爱达荷州逝世。
