位于白神山脚下的渔师町，生活着一个幸福的四口之家。然而一场车祸令女主人美佐子（クノ真季子饰）身负重伤，昏迷不醒。她的儿子小亮（伊澤柾樹饰）悲伤不已，将一切归罪于乱跑的小狗小白。为了安抚小亮的情绪，父亲田川刚（尾美としのり饰）只得将小白送走。然而身处异地的小白，却逃出樊笼，一路坎坷辗转回到了渔师町。它逡巡在小镇的四周，从远处注视着小亮的一举一动。一向照顾流浪犬的菊谷节子（薬師丸ひろ子饰）注意到了这条通体雪白的秋田犬，她最终成为了小白的新主人，并为其取名蓬夫（蓬夫饰）。不久，命运再次将蓬夫和小亮扭结在了一起……本片根据真实事件改编，影片中的蓬夫由真实的蓬夫扮演。
