导演尼古拉斯．雷。背景在1942年二次大战时，美国与日本在太平洋瓜达康纳群岛正进行生死斗。美国海军航空作战黑猫中队，奉命前往支持。中队长柯比（约翰．韦恩饰）刚履任，要求纪律严明，而飞行员却和他保持疏离态度。执行长卡尔葛芬（罗伯特．瑞安饰）却随和感性，很得军心。他也批评中队长不妥协的态度，认为飞行员出生入死，多少也要给点自由的空间。中队长只要他们适应战斗生活避免死亡，对此不以为意，其实他也不是个毫无感情的人，每次部属伤亡，他都写信给家属慰问分担痛苦。随着日军反扑，双方海、空军在太平洋激战，大家才了解中队长其实热爱着生命，执行长在紧要关头也抛弃前嫌为国家任务努力以赴，终于获得胜利。本片讲述的是一个外表冷酷而内心却是热爱着部下和生命的一个中队长，演员的成功演出令本片增色不少，在冰冷的战争背后也有着一丝一缕的温情热流。
