故事发生在一座地处偏远的小镇之中，老侦探戴夫（汤米·李·琼斯 Tommy Lee Jones 饰）正在调查一起恶性凶杀案件，这位凶残的杀手在镇上着实引起了不小的恐慌。随着调查的深入，戴夫发现案情变得愈加扑朔迷离，一个名叫巴尔博尼（约翰·古德曼 John Goodman 饰）的男人浮出了水面，成为了戴夫的主要怀疑对象。
