从这个基点，林肯创作了一个讲述因为科学研究而"激活"超自然物体的故事。其中自然充满了恐怖、血腥这样的元素。这样的故事，其实又陷入到了传统恐怖片的情节之中。对此，林肯表示反对，他说："如果有鬼魂存在于这部电影中，那么它和传统恐怖片中的鬼魂亦有相当多的不同。这部电影中的鬼魂和梦魇并不是实际存在的东西，而是一种黑暗的、恶意的、非人类的、尚不知晓的元素。它们能从人物的恐惧中获得力量，也能从正面摧毁一个人物的信仰。在灵异现象的研究领域里，这种灵异现象是最恐惧、最令人无法招架、也是最恐怖的--全身幽灵现象（a full body apparition）。"而为了制作出这个恐怖的"鬼魂"，剧组找到了迈克·伊利沙德，他是一个专门负责制作鬼魂道具的公司的负责人。在伊利沙德的协助下，剧组制作了一件巨大的戏服，这件戏服由扮演鬼魂的Marti Martulis穿着，辅以一些CG动画和视觉特效，鬼魂就被制作了出来。有很多人质疑这个鬼魂不够刺激，林肯说："其实，最可怕的东西，往往就是我们最熟悉的东西……"
