亨瑞（比利?克鲁德普饰）是个性格奇怪的儿童读物作家，他愤世嫉俗的个性也不愿与别人接触，可是自从他唯一的朋友兼合作多年的插画画家瑞迪（汤姆?威尔金森饰）因病逝世后，为了能几时出版新书，公司不得不找来了另一位插画家合作。

女孩露西（曼迪?摩尔饰）是个怀才不遇的画家，刚开始她得不到亨瑞的认同，而且恶言相向。可是为了巨款酬劳，露西还是尝试去跟这个怪癖作家合作，也只好处处迁就他。

亨瑞心里还是惦记着已逝的好友，他经常在潜意识里与瑞迪对话，听取他的意见。露西的前男友在这时候回来找她，本来抗拒的亨瑞也渐渐愿意作为一个聆听者，听取露西的不安。

亨瑞做出了很大的牺牲希望露西能取得灵感，在这段相处的过程中，渐入佳境的两人竟发生出了一段情缘……
