故事发生在科德角，世纪之交，三位退伍海军船长生活在一起。为了让他们的房子保持整洁他们想出来的唯一方法是他们其中的一位结婚。然而问题出现了：三个人都不想要结婚。最后他们决定抛硬币来决定而杰瑞船长输了。他们在一份报纸上为他登了一个征婚广告。不久一个来自南塔吉特的名为玛莎的女人回应了广告。杰瑞船长马上临阵退缩。

在一连串的搞笑事件之后，佩里兹船长想出了一个挽救的方案，先用缓兵之计把玛莎留下，而一边催促杰瑞船长鼓足勇气去向她求婚。然而最后却是泽布船长爱上了玛莎并向她求婚。杰瑞船长开始有点无法接受这个结果，但是很快他就真心祝福他朋友了。
