一日，麦克斯正在博物馆采访，一个名叫山姆（约翰·特拉沃塔 John Travolta 饰）的男人持枪劫持了博物馆的馆长。原来，山姆曾经是博物馆的工作人员，在裁员中丢了工作，无法接受现实的他选择了用极端的方式表达自己的愤怒。很快，敏感的麦克斯发现，自己或许可以利用这场事故挽回自己在新闻界的名声，于是，野心勃勃的他立刻展开了他的工作。随着麦克斯的播报，越来越多的媒体和记者聚集到了博物馆周围，很快，事态的发展就脱离了控制。
