在现实生活中，琼斯是第一个在西方媒体报道苏联 1932-1933 年大饥荒的记者。但由于很多知识分子对苏维埃政权持同情态度，他的报道并不受欢迎。当时隐瞒了大饥荒事实的杜兰蒂也在此后招致批评，他因对苏联的持续报道而获得的普利策奖也被《纽约时报》称为是“我们为之感到惭愧但可以做出解释”（Guilty With an Explanation）的一个奖项。
