高三生迈尔士梦想离开美国伊利诺州的偏僻小镇、前往大都市攻读电影，然而骤逝的爸爸生前将他的大学基金挥霍在情妇身上，妈妈也因而两手空空无能为力，顿时眼看大好前程即将就此断送，想尽办法排除万难的迈尔士发现一个奖学金机会，就是加入校内唯一的排球队，希望能够让他顺利进入芝加哥的大学，只不过这个机会有点不寻常，并引起轩然大波和强烈反对，因为那是一支女子排球队……

编导纳森阿德洛夫取材自己14岁的亲身经历，不同于一般同志成长电影，本片不聚焦于主角的岀柜经历，而是呈现他坚持己志、达成目标的毅力，并献给所有在成长过程中遭逢意外颠簸的人，如同迈尔士和他妈妈，学习如何独立、秉持耐心、寻得自信，并迎向否极泰来的人生。
