故事发生在19世纪的英国，杨科（文森特·佩雷斯 Vincent Perez 饰）在航海旅行中遭遇了海难，幸运又不幸的成为了整艘船上唯一的一个幸存者。海浪将杨科冲到了一座美丽的海滨小镇上，在那里，没有人愿意帮助穿得破破烂烂浑身上下又脏兮兮的杨科，除了一个名叫艾米（蕾切尔·薇兹 Rachel Weisz 饰）的女佣。

在艾米的精心照料之下，杨科渐渐恢复了健康。艾米是大户人家的私生女，因为这个尴尬的身份，她只能从事低贱的女佣的工作，并且在这个小镇上处处都遭受白眼和排挤，这境遇和杨科这个外来者几乎一模一样。两个同样不受待见的人只能在彼此的身上寻找温暖，很快，他们就坠入了情网。
