在电视影集「迈阿密风云」中饰演组长的爱德华詹姆斯欧蒙，以这部描写墨西哥裔黑帮生涯的电影作为他首度执导的作品。片中主要人物是一位在洛杉矶长大、名叫山塔纳的少年，他和两个朋友一起组成帮派，不久后便因闯空门而遭逮捕；由于山塔纳获释后不久就再度犯案，便从少年感化院〃直升〃监狱。在牢里的这18年岁月里，他在监狱内外建立了自己的犯罪王国，从贩毒到杀人无恶不作。当山塔纳终于出狱后，他回到旧时的街区想要改过向善、重新做人，但他的昔日伙伴却不肯放过他，逼他重拾黑帮老大之职...由于此片是在监狱内实景拍摄，并将一些真正的犯人拍摄进去，因而在美国上映时引起不少媒体的注意。
