女演员塞莱斯特在一部著名的肥皂剧《太阳又西沉》中扮演玛吉一角。年轻的洛丽在剧中扮演无家可归的哑女安吉莉克。该剧另一个女演员蒙塔娜（她扮演女护士南）正在和制片人戴维·巴恩斯勾搭，打算篡夺她的地位。他们将塞莱斯特20年不见的旧情人杰弗里重新召回，让他原来扮演的兰达尔一角。杰弗里一见洛丽就着了迷。巴恩斯和蒙塔娜想利用这一情况便安排兰达尔医生去勾引安吉莉克。当他们准备接吻时，塞莱斯特猛然醒悟到洛丽其实是她和杰弗里的私生女。塞莱斯特暴露的往事使这部电视连续剧的收视率飞升。参加剧情发展到最高潮时的一场戏的排练时，所有的演员都置剧本于不顾，即兴创作：玛吉准备将她的大脑捐献给安吉莉克，而哑女在最后一刻突然开口讲话了。三个演员终于相互谅解了。蒙塔娜却暴露出自己是个骗子――她原是一个变了性的男人。
