玛戈特（妮可?基德曼 饰）带着儿子一同前往参加妹妹宝琳（詹妮弗?杰森?李 饰）的婚礼。玛戈特与宝琳的性格各异，两姐妹的关系一直也不是太好，但她还是愿意参加妹妹的婚礼。

当玛戈特看到自己的未来妹夫马尔科姆（杰克?布莱克 饰）后，她深知自己猜想的没有错，她知道这个无业流民是无法配得上自己的妹妹的。

宝琳对姐姐的到来感到十分欣喜。一向刻薄的玛戈特仿佛为宝琳家带来了许多麻烦。就连宝琳的女儿也不喜欢这位阿姨。玛戈特不想自己的儿子与情夫迪克的女儿发生关系，她深爱自己的儿子。可是自己又周旋在丈夫与迪克之间无法选择。

玛戈特发现了马尔科姆与迪克女儿之间有不可告人的秘密，她想把这件事告诉妹妹，宝琳也讨厌玛戈特把自己的生活经历写成小说，两人争吵不断。这时候，宝琳从男友口中得知了他出轨的事，玛戈特决定与她一起回纽约去，姐妹俩都知道，她们是爱着彼此的……
