该片是关于前东德歌手格哈德?冈德曼动荡生平的传记电影。冈德曼白天在露天煤矿驾驶着挖土车，但晚上却作为歌手登上舞台，以自己创作的音乐感染他人。他以生活和生死为题材，却也涉及政治和社会批判主题。凭借其颇具个人化和真实感、既忧郁又富有诗意的作品，他成为八十年代东德地区的大众偶像，但也时常遭遇同上级的冲突。甚至在两德统一后，冈德曼的受欢迎程度亦丝毫不减。然而，1995年时，冈德曼作为间谍与东德国家安全局合作的往事被公开，尽管这似乎并未影响到他的音乐事业，却令他陷入了漫长的个人斗争。该片获2019年德国电影奖包括最佳影片、导演和男主角在内等六项大奖和三项提名。（小易甫字幕组）
