美国洛杉矶未来艺术展览会上， 画廊主、经纪人、艺术家、收藏家、评论家、艺术顾问以及多金买主觥筹交错，谈笑风生，言必称的艺术，离不开的金钱。艺术圈的小女子约瑟芬那（扎威·阿什顿 Zawe Ashton 饰），某天发现住在同一栋公寓的无名艺术家意外死亡。在偶然走进对方的家中时，约瑟芬那被大量未公之于众的艺术作品所倾倒。她将画作拿给有男女关系的评论家莫弗（杰克·吉伦哈尔 Jake Gyllenhaal 饰），对方敏锐地意识到了这些作品背后的巨大价值。在此之后，所有业内相关人士如同苍蝇闻见了腐肉，对这批神秘作品趋之若鹜。而莫非则开始调查这个名叫维特利尔·迪斯的神秘画家的过往。

维特利尔的画作仿佛具有无穷的魔力和生命，人们被它们吸引，命运也为之所左右……
