“金臂人”弗兰奇（Frank Sinatra 饰）在强制戒毒部门治疗6个月后回到了自己熟悉的街区。毒贩路易马上向他兜售毒品，以前的赌场老板邀请他再次为自己坐庄，靠假装失去自理能力俘获了弗兰奇的伴侣佐茜催促他尽快回到以前的工作……然而弗兰奇对曾经的混乱生活只有厌倦，他戒毒 期间学习了打鼓，并牢记医生的话要转行做鼓手，但很快在众人的阻扰下他又回到了赌桌，毒瘾发作让他最终无法摆脱路易。

因为费兰奇不忍抛下“下肢瘫痪”的左茜而无法和互有情意的酒吧女莫利（Kim Novak 饰）结合，只有潦倒的小偷朋友斯巴诺站在他一边。失去了莫利的弗兰奇诸事不顺，更大的困境还在等待着他……
