本片以搬演的手法记录了法国西部卢瓦河畔的乡村生活。在南特附近卢瓦尔河畔的一个小村庄里，住着一个木鞋匠和他的妻子及他们的养子。木鞋匠的工作就是日复一日地用古老的工艺制作木鞋，有时他的生活中也会发生一些重大事件，比如他的老朋友于贝尔去世了，他给妻子买了一辆崭新的独轮车。一个周末，木鞋匠和老伴到镇上作完弥撒之后来到卢瓦河边钓鱼，在镇上裁缝铺工作的养子由于要跟女友约会而没有陪他们去钓鱼。本片导演雅克·德米（1931-1990）生于本片描绘的法国西部卢瓦省，自幼喜爱电影。他在独立拍片之前担任过乔治·鲁吉埃的助手，本片是在鲁吉埃监制下完成的，在指导非职业演员方面深得鲁吉埃的《法尔比克》的真传，而本片的片名及拍摄手法令人想起意大利导演艾马诺·奥尔米完成于 1978的影片《木屐树》。在新浪潮电影运动时期，德米转拍故事片，他在南特拍摄的《劳拉》（1960）受到广泛好评。德米的影片颇具浪漫色彩甚至传奇风格，其他代表作还有《瑟堡的雨伞》（1964）、《驴皮公主》《1970》。此外，德米的妻子阿涅斯·瓦尔达也是新浪潮电影的重要人物。
