曾经，拿破仑（马龙·白兰度 Marlon Brando 饰）爱上了名为黛丝蕾（简·西蒙斯 Jean Simmons 饰）的美丽少女，随着时间的推移，黛丝蕾对拿破仑的爱意日益加深，甚至不惜献出大量金钱资助这个她最爱的男人。然而，拿破仑很快就发现，黛丝蕾并不能帮助自己实现自己在政治领域的野心，转而开始追求名媛约瑟芬（梅尔·奥勃朗 Merle Oberon 饰），悲愤交加的黛丝蕾怀揣着一颗破碎的心成为了伯纳达将军（迈克尔·伦尼 Michael Rennie 饰）的妻子。

之后，拿破仑平步青云最终到达了权力的顶峰，而伯纳达将军则率军公然反对拿破仑的统治。莫斯科一役后，战败的拿破仑被流放到了荒岛之上然而野心不死，黛丝蕾出面劝说，希望曾经的爱人能够放弃战争，接受流放。
