电影根据David Grann的报道改编，讲述了一位父亲Todd Willingham（Shia）被指控纵火谋杀了自己的三个孩子，虽然他一直坚称自己是无辜的，但还是被执行了死刑。在这过程中，剧作家Elziabeth Gilbert（将由劳拉·邓恩扮演）一直捍卫着Todd的清白。这位女作家在Todd的故事中的经历也很离奇——在Todd被送去执行死刑时，她自己也遭遇了一场严重的车祸。

在Todd被执行死刑之后，Gilbert成了坚定的反对死刑的人士。另外在这件案子中，似乎也有法医的证据可以证明Todd的清白，让人想起去年大热的剧《制造杀人犯》。
