该片改编自英国当今最红的小说家之一John Fowles（约翰·傅敖斯）的处女作。他的作品很多，其中，长篇小说有六部，另外有一部中、短篇故事集。长篇小说中已有三部拍成电影：The Collector《蝴蝶春梦》，The Magus《占星家》和The French Lieutenant's Woman《法国中尉的女人》。

该片导演William Wyler 威廉·惠勒被称作“导演中的导演”。曾经执导《罗马假日》，史诗巨片《宾虚》(Ben－Hur)，《忠勇之家》(Mrs.Miniver），等，共获得１２次奥斯卡最佳导演提名，共有14位演员因出演他的影片而获得奥斯卡最佳演员奖。
