1974年，美国费城。大学毕业的吉姆·埃里斯由于黑人身份找不到任何工作，看着那些贫民窟的年轻孩子们因为公共篮球场被拆而无处可去，热爱游泳的吉姆暗暗有了想法。在朋友埃尔斯顿的帮助下，吉姆租了当地废弃的游泳场馆，开设了一个游泳俱乐部。
靠着自己的个人魅力和惊人的泳技，他很快招集了一帮热血的穷孩子们。然而在这个费城最贫穷的街区，要将一群龙蛇混杂的初学者们训练成能力超群的游泳健将何其不易！队内矛盾、训练时间有限、缺乏资金，好不容易一切将步入正轨时，游泳馆又被挂上了拆除标志。
然而，怀着一颗永不气馁的心，吉姆毅然决定成立历史上第一支美国黑人游泳队，并替他们报名参加洲际游泳锦标赛！比赛日益临近，种族歧视的大墙再一次挡在了吉姆和他的队伍的面前，但即便面临拆散队伍的威胁、政府的阻力，吉姆却带着游泳队，披荆斩棘。他们最终会证明，不管在泳池内外，只要拼尽全力，胜利就一定在你面前！
