警察费舍尔（Michael Elphick 饰）避居开罗多年，最近被召回欧洲，参与一起连锁彩票杀人案的侦破。费舍尔拜会了恩师奥斯本，老人被警队开除后状况不佳，心血之作《犯罪元素》未受重视，而当年的同事克拉玛摇身一变成为警察局长。卖彩票姑娘的尸体在矿井中被发现，是连锁杀人案的最新受害者，费舍尔从奥斯本处得到嫌疑人格雷的零碎信息，按照《犯罪元素》提出的理论，费舍尔将自己想象成格雷，按照对方三年前的路线前进以求获得线索。费舍尔在路线上的妓院结识了一位东方女子金，自此被对方跟随。费舍尔逐渐迷失在混乱的欧洲，而金和格雷的关系也出乎他的意料。
本片是导演Lars von Trier的长片处女作，获1984年戛纳电影节技术奖等多项褒奖。
