1936年，纳粹军队咱领了莱因兰，一炮未发；1938年3月，占领了奥地利，一炮未发；1939年占领了整个捷克斯洛伐克，还是一炮未发。欧洲处于二次世界大战的前夕，但波兰的布朗斯基剧院却忘记了他们的处境，仍然歌舞升平。在演员们感觉到战争的威胁的时候，剧院的老板兼主演的布朗斯基关心的只是他的戏剧和生意。而老板娘，也是整个城市最耀眼的女明星安娜也忙着和他的情人飞行员安德烈约会。
但好景不长，在那不久，剧团接到了演出的禁令，因为他们的演出节目有反希特勒的内容。而飞行员安德烈也飞往英国继续展开对纳粹的战斗，但因为军人们的疏忽，一份印有他们亲人朋友名字的名单落到了间谍萨兰斯基教授的手里。这封可能会摧毁波兰抵抗运动组织的密信事关重大，安德烈受命回国处理此事。但因为安娜的名字在名单上，剧院也被牵扯进来。
于是一群舞台剧演员在布朗斯基和他的妻子安娜的带领下，同纳粹展开了一场别开生面的斗争，并且通过他们的演出有力地支持着抵抗运动。为了妻子，布朗斯基冒着生命危险假扮成欧哈德上校，将间谍萨兰斯基教授诓骗到盖世太保办公室(其实是他的剧院)，想诱使他交出那份波兰地下组织名单。教授起初不辨真伪，糊里糊涂将名单献给了“他的德国朋友”。
然而，不明就里的教授谈起了布朗斯基与那名飞行员的“风流韵事”，布朗斯基妒火中烧，结果露出了马脚。教授这才恍然大悟，但为时已晚，演员们处决了这个卖国贼。虽然事情由些许漏洞，但演员们还是十分卖力的扮演各自的角色。甚至假扮希特勒蒙骗过当地的纳粹，最终，所有人乘坐飞机逃离了这个人间地狱。

《生死大逃亡》改编自德国导演大师刘别谦曾经执导的著名黑色喜剧，开场戏乃公认的银幕经典。本片讲述第二次世界大战波兰沦陷期间，一群舞台演员和纳粹斗智斗勇，防止一个间谍把有关波兰的重要情报送到德国，保护了华沙地下抵抗组织，并且从纳粹眼皮底下成功地逃脱。剧中情节紧凑，笑料恒声，虽然年代已久，但看起来依然乐趣十足，宛如一出《虎口脱险》。片名出自《哈姆雷特》著名台词，是男主角梦寐以求表演的内容，影片表达了导演对二战的控诉。
