在一次前往非洲丛林的考察行动中，动物学家奥哈拉（比尔·帕克斯顿 Bill Paxton 饰）意外而惊喜的发现了一只身长十五尺的巨型黑猩猩，让奥哈拉感到吃惊的是，对于陌生人，黑猩猩表现出了恐惧与敌意，但在一位名为吉尔（查理兹·塞隆 Charlize Theron 饰）的女孩身边，这个巨大的动物却展现出了温柔和依赖的一面，因为吉尔是它从小到大的“朋友”，她称其为“乔”。

经不住奥哈拉的反复劝说和乞求，吉尔同意了陪伴乔回到美国，可是，奥哈拉此举本是出于善良与好心，没想到却惹出了许多的麻烦，也让乔陷入了危险之中。终于，忍受不了受到禁锢的生活，乔拖着它十五尺的庞大躯体，暴走了。
