这部电影获得了不错的声誉，但是在商业上却是一部失败之作。柯达将版权卖给了美国电视网NBC，因而《理查三世》成为第一部同时在影院和电视上放映的电影。该片在NBC上获得了极高的收视率，因此有人推断，通过电视观看这部电影的人数将多于历史上观看舞台版《理查三世》的总人数。
