历史戏曲片；表现我国元代戏曲家关汉卿创作名剧《窦娥冤》，抨击当朝奸佞，揭露贪官污吏罪行，被皇帝宠臣加害。押入死牢的斗争故事，颂扬了关汉卿坚毅不屈的斗争精神。

其主要剧情为：元代奸佞横行。关汉卿目睹青年寡妇朱小兰冤死，得到歌伎朱帘秀的支持和鼓励，将此案写成杂剧《窦娥冤》，由朱帘秀主演朱小兰的化身窦娥，抨击了贪官污吏的罪恶。皇帝宠臣阿合马勒令修改剧本，关汉卿严词拒绝，与朱帘秀一起被押入死牢。

他们并未屈服，关汉卿在狱中作“蝶双飞”赠朱帘秀，以表坚贞不屈的精神和忠贞的爱情。
