《曾根崎心中》（1703）是净琉璃史上第一部现实剧（世话物），也是日本最早的社会故事剧，引起了很大轰动。这第一部净琉璃中的现代情死剧，它所反映的不仅是当时的一种社会悲剧，而且还有新兴町人阶级的道德观和日本的传统文化观念。《曾根崎心中》改编自元禄16年（1703年）旧历四月七日早上，大阪堂岛新地天满屋的游女初（はつ）（21岁）与内本町酱油商平野屋的店员德兵卫（徳兵卫）（25岁）在梅田曾根崎的露天神森林中殉情一事。
