乔什（弗雷德·阿斯泰尔 Fred Astaire 饰）和戴娜（金格尔·罗杰斯 Ginger Rogers 饰）是戏剧舞团里天造地设的一对璧人，两人在舞台上的表演互相配合得天衣无缝，每一场演出都大受好评。然而在生活里，两人却常常因为各种各样的琐事发生争吵，夫妻之间的感情早已经出现了裂痕。

戴娜受到了话剧导演雅克的邀请去表演话剧，可是话剧和喜剧有着截然不同的表演形式，屡屡在舞台上遭遇失败的戴娜对自己感到非常的失望，甚至开始怀疑自己是否真的拥有表演的才华。为了打消妻子的疑虑，乔什假装成雅克给戴娜打电话，在电话中给予了她肯定，重新找回自信的戴娜在舞台上贡献出了完美的表演。
