极具野心的挑战性钜作，宗教、经济、世代关系、家庭、情爱，种种议题都经过奇特而荒谬的扭曲，呈现出世人经常视而不见的一面。如弥猴一般在十字架上单手晃荡的耶稣塑像、心智退化的老人在满室各怀鬼胎的贺客面前度过百岁生日、放火诈财的父亲，写诗发疯入院的儿子，独特的视觉语言，在看似连结松散的场景之间，构筑了导演心目中当代世界的深层面貌。

在一个不知名所在的奇特夜晚，怪事接连不断地发生：毫无尊严的公司职员遭到屈辱的裁员；外来移民莫名其妙地被不良份子袭击，整个巴士站的人袖手旁观；玩大锯活人的魔术师真的把志愿上台的观众开膛剖腹。一团混乱当中，灰烟满脸的卡尔出现了，他刚刚放火烧了自己的家具店，想骗火灾保险金。一整夜，人人都忙乱的无法阖眼。

第二天，局势混乱的程度有增无减，保险公司与卡尔正在角力，整个城市陷入完全动弹不得的大塞车当中，当一切在千禧年一开始就似乎都失去了控制的时候，卡尔慢慢察觉到世界的荒谬，也渐渐了解要作一个「人类」有多困难。

这是一部由一系列小品组成的情节松散的电影，充满了黑色幽默。影片中每个人都变得失去理智，一些无条理的怪异行为发生了。一个小职员遭到侮辱性的解雇，一个新移民在大街上遭人袭击，一个魔术师在表演中出现了不该有的失误。在这些怪事中有一件特别引人注目，浑身是灰的Karl为了得到保险金烧毁了自己的家具店。最后他们体会到世界有多荒谬，做人真难。
