本片从两个孩子的视角出发，以季节更替为线索，分四个段落讲述了一个以土耳其小镇为背景的家庭故事。故事第一段展现了一户人家，家中11岁的女儿正是上小学的年纪。她还不习惯面对无情的社会现实以及生活给她的残忍伤害，但她必须学会适应。第二段发生在春天，女孩和小他四岁的弟弟相伴前往玉米地，他们的家人正在那里等着他们。穿越玉米地时，他们似乎体悟到了自然与旷野的神秘。第三段中，这对姐弟目睹了成人世界的复杂与黑暗。最后一段发生在家里，梦境与现实在这里平静地交错。本片以导演的个人回忆与自白为基础，辅以大量自然取景与固定镜头，可看出锡兰标志性的导演风格已初具雏形。 由于过去一段难以磨灭的痛苦经历，一对老夫妇分居已久。阔别多年后，终于有一天，他们再次相见，打算开诚布公地谈一谈，以期时间能够修补情感的裂痕。但是这次本应弥补伤痛的谈话，并没有像他们预期的那样进行。
