1969年，The Who出版了双唱片概念专辑《Tommy》，后人把它定义为历史上第一张成功的摇滚音乐剧专辑。《Tommy》的成功不仅在于商业上，它还同时在主流音乐杂志和地下摇滚刊物中获得了认同。同年，乐队举行全球巡演，地点包括伦敦大剧场和纽约大都会音乐剧场。
这是摇滚乐史上第一部以歌剧的形式表现一名聋哑儿童TOMMY生活的作品。作品涉及到宗教毒品、歌星生涯、玄学及赌博等。
1975年，编导肯．拉塞尔把它拍成电影，讲述汤米（罗杰．戴德里饰）在小时候因窥见母亲（安．玛格丽特饰）与情夫通奸而变成盲哑白痴，长大后偶然发现他具有打弹子机天才，因而成为青年偶像。后来突然复原，更被捧为神人一般。
除了再现经典的音乐外，本片映象技巧亦十分多采多姿。值得一提的是，罗杰．戴德里作为乐队主唱在片中出演Tommy一角，演技比起专业演员也不惶多让，对角色演绎十分到位。剧中传达出反战，反传统教条，以及对儿童身心创伤的深入刻画。是一部结合了摇滚乐与百老汇舞台表演的佳作。音乐在此表达出戏剧的张力，同时藉由演唱者的声腔变化所传递出的感情，更加深观者对Tommy内心挣扎与自我封闭的同感。
