导演奥米建立风格和信誉的早期写实作品，叙述了一个15岁乡下男孩到米兰的大公司谋职的经过。男孩多米尼克在求职过程中结识了一个女孩，她也在等待被录用，在经历了各种考验后，两人最终如愿进入了这家公司。多米尼克凭借自己不断的勤奋努力，成为办公室主管，但他仍不满足，对生活和前途充满勃勃野心。
影片展示了意大利社会生活的艰辛，讽刺了谋职的贪婪，还提出了一个很耐人寻味的问题，那就是工业社会的紧张、单调与葬送青春、泯灭纯真。全片注重的是日常生活的细节描写，还原了一个小职员普通生活和工作的心理真实。导演没有过多把自己对生活的评价放进电影，他只是以“生活流”手法白描了这样一个普通的故事，纪实的风格朴实无华。
