2014年12月MTV台整季预订了该剧，这是MTV进入有剧本节目领域以来最具雄心的一个新项目，故事根据Terry Brooks撰写的系列奇幻小说《沙娜拉之剑》改编。《超人前传》（Smallville）的创作人Al Gough和Miles Millar将撰写该剧的剧本，电影《忍者神龟》（Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles）的导演Jonathan Liebesman担任前两集的导演，他们三人还将兼任执行制片人。Terry Brooks本人亦担任执行制片人。Jon Favreau原本应该导演首集，但因为档期冲突而未能如愿，他将保留执行制片人的身份。
