这一季的故事依然围绕着泰德等五人展开。时间流转到2009年，相恋多年的马修（杰森·席格尔 Jason Segel 饰）和莉莉（艾丽森·汉妮根 Alyson Hannigan 饰）结婚后搬进了新的公寓，过着幸福甜蜜的小日子。他们最好的朋友泰德（乔什·拉德诺 Josh Radnor 饰），在上一季屡次碰壁之后，他决定放弃继续当建筑师，而改行做一名大学教授，同时，他也在努力地找寻自己的真爱之女。
