丹尼因参与北爱尔兰共和军的活动而被判入狱，在贝尔法斯特的监狱中服刑14年。出狱后他决心不再参与政治，而且要努力避免因政治造成流血事件。他把自己最熟悉的拳击运动作为新生活的起点，不但自己投身其中，而且还训练一批年轻选手。这时，他又开始面对分开十几年的恋人，她一直艰难地抚养着14岁的儿子林恩。丹尼当然想重续前缘，但他过去的所作所为时不时地会成为障碍。影片中的人物都是处在困境中的人，他们都有伤心的过去，但又都对未来有着美好的憧憬。
