二战期间，英国姑娘夏洛特（凯特?布兰切特 Cate Blanchett 饰）与法国飞行员彼特一见钟情，两人很快堕入了爱河。然而厄运降临，皮特驾驶的飞机被德军击落了，从此下落不明。为了寻找爱人，夏洛特改名换姓来到了前线——法国南方。在那里，她加入了法国地下抵抗组织，邂逅了地下组织的骨干朱利安（比利?克鲁德普 Billy Crudup 饰）。于是，夏洛特对外的身份就是朱利安的管家，暗地里和他一起从事地下抵抗活动，她在行动中英勇坚强，拯救了许许多多被纳粹迫害的犹太人。夏洛特和朱利安的日久相处中，两人渐渐产生了一份情愫……
