在未来的世界里，美国政府被推翻而成立了吉累共和国，这是一个专利独裁的政权 ，由于某些不明的原因社会上不孕的原因极为严重，因此有生育能力的年轻女人被当作特权子生育下一代的工具。凯和丈夫及五岁的女儿企图逃离吉累共和国时遭到逮捕，因而被送到统治者家中作为统治者生育的工具。由于统治者为凯之美色所惑而开始要求增加幽会次数，统治者之妻便唆使凯与年轻司机来往，但凯和司机却假戏真作，先杀了统治者后，两人便相偕浪迹天涯而去。

本片是一部有独创性的当代妄想型影片，是一部告诫人们预防未来不测的科幻恐怖片，其中也包括了两性生活所作的一些心理分析。这部怪诞的情节剧警告人们，如果不制止核试验和化学毒品对人类生活环境的污染、宗教偏执狂和荒淫无度的性生活，那么在不远的将来美国社会将是个什么样子。

沃尔克·施隆多夫是德国导演。早年在巴黎攻读政治经济学，后进入巴黎高等电影学院学习电影制作，曾追随法国电影前辈大师雷诺阿、梅尔维尔、路易·马勒等，毕业于法国电影高等学校，因此作品中常流露出法国风味。1966年开始当导演，《青年特尔勒斯》预示了新德国电影的觉醒。《铁皮鼓》获得戛纳电影节金棕榈奖和奥斯卡最佳外国片奖。擅长艺术片，具有现代电影语言表现手段，也注重市场和同观众的交流，文学功底深厚。创作力旺盛，仍不断有新作问世。
