本片是一个浪漫爱情喜剧，亚德.道奇（安东尼奥.班德拉斯饰）老早就放弃成为画家的心愿，情愿窝在迈阿密海滩区当个画廊老板，因为生意不好，亚德只能想其他的办法赚钱撑下去。这时候一个带点傻气的贵妇贝蒂.可娜（梅兰妮.格里菲斯饰）出现在亚德的面前，两人一见钟情，一发而不可收拾，共度缠绵激情的一夜。贝蒂刚离第二次婚，她的前两次婚姻是和同一个男人金恩。此时贝蒂遇见亚德，便把他当作第三任丈夫的人选，而贝蒂的前夫却还在纠缠她。在亚德根本来不及考虑之前，贝蒂已寄出喜帖了。一切都似乎已势在必行了。但此时的亚德却无法自拔的爱上了贝蒂的妹妹丽兹.可娜（黛丽.汉娜饰），姐妹两人的个性大相径庭，在百般试图延迟婚礼不成后，亚德心生一计，自己创造出双胞胎弟弟巴特，其实就是亚德一人在现实生活中分饰两角，希望他的巴特能获得丽兹的芳心。这个计划看来似乎太完美了，可这个连上帝都想不出来的好办法能实现吗？还是亚德的大麻烦才刚刚开始。
