不切实际的梦想家卡文在机场为了逃债匆忙中发现了来迎接25年未见面的老朋友德莱克的盖瑞一家人。于是他急中生智，冒充自己是德莱克，钻进了盖瑞的车摆脱了眼前的危机。

盖瑞带他来到斯维克里高中职业节的会场上，因为德莱克是学校请来的成功人士，要在会上作为嘉宾并发表演讲。面对一双双期待的眼睛，他不知道德莱克的丝毫情况，无从编造他的成功经验，他甚至不知道德莱克的职业。此后，在高尔夫球场上、在品酒现场、在手术台前他都是手忙脚乱，穷于应付，因为德莱克是所有这些方面的专家，他是一位出色的牙医。

这一切最终被真正的德莱克的到来戳穿了，他是看到有人冒充自己去学校发表演讲的消息后赶来的。与他一同前来的还有追债的黑帮分子。尽管他欺骗了盖瑞一家人，但是他们在短短的几天里已经和他结下了友谊：他帮助盖瑞和妻子化解了矛盾，帮助大女儿找回了失去的恋人，帮助小儿子勇敢地面对挑战，和小女儿一同看动画片……他是最理解他们的朋友。而他也改变了自己，以前他只是索取，现在他体会到付出的快乐。更重要的是，他了解了友谊的珍贵。
