在澳大利亚新南威尔士殖民地建立之初就不断有囚犯想方设法逃出去，虽说他们普遍没有什么地理知识，甚至都不知道自己究竟身处何处。很多囚犯虽然暂时成功逃离殖民地的定居点，但是从长远来看并算不上成功：有些人因为没有办法在澳大利亚的荒蛮的土地上生存，在饥饿的驱使之下不得不返回定居点，还有些人则永远消失在茫茫原野之上。

所有第一批到达澳洲的数百名囚犯当中，目前知道的仅有一人最终成功逃离定居点并返回英国，她就是Mary Bryant。Mary出生于英格兰康沃尔郡，她的逃亡故事比传奇小说还要精彩百倍， 她的丈夫， William Bryant也是同批到达澳洲的一名囚犯，两人在殖民地注册结婚。一七九一年早些时候，他们夫妇二人，带着两个年幼的孩子和另外七名囚犯一起偷了殖民地当局的一艘小船逃走，在随后的六十九天当中，他们成功沿着澳大利亚东海岸航行五千多公里，最终抵达荷兰人控制的帝汶岛（今分属印尼与东帝汶）。

然而他们最后真的能顺利回到遥远的故乡吗？
