在前两季中，由于王后凯瑟琳只诞下了一个女儿玛丽，苦无子嗣继位的亨利八世对她不再宠幸，转而爱上女侍官安-博林。工于心计的安不甘做国王的情人，于是，就罢黜凯瑟琳和认可安的身份，亨利八世与罗马教廷展开了长达十年的对抗。最终更不惜宣布脱离罗马教廷，自封为英国教会的最高领袖。然而，安只生下了一个女儿伊丽莎白，亨利八世很快又移情别恋，以通奸罪名将安送上断头台。
在第三季中，剧情的焦点仍是亨利八世的爱情故事，他将先后迎娶被他称为“此生真爱”的侍女简-西摩，克里维斯的安妮以及凯瑟琳-霍华德。
与此同时，王室的宗教政策在民间引发了著名的“求恩巡礼”事件，亨利八世下令对其进行血腥镇压。
从首播开始，剧中便有着无数的缠绵悱恻的香艳镜头，以及尔虞我诈的宫廷勾斗，但据说超过85%的剧情源于史书记载，证明历史老人撰下的剧本，并不逊于任何好莱坞编剧。剧情为观众还原历史的同时，镜头下优美的爱尔兰田园风光，以及华丽的宫廷布景、服饰，亦是本片的看点之一。
