Bickham 的小说，故事内容是发生在１９世纪美国加州的某一小镇，有三位孤儿被迫由一位Russel Donovan 先生继承监护权，然而这位Donovan 先生却是一位生活漂泊的赌徒，抚养小孩的责任实在是一大无法承受的负担，后来没想到有了一大转变，在一次地震发生之后，三个小孩居然意外发现了大量地层外露的金矿，市面价值菲薄，小孩成了富翁的同时，却也因此带来一连串的麻烦，尤其镇上许多贪婪的居民全都图谋不轨，存放在哪里都不安全，因此他们被迫跟一个从事非法活动的搞笑双人组合作，这两位活宝Theodore Ogelvie 与Amos Tucker 因此展开一场金矿抢劫行动，他们却不知对方也不是省油的灯，正有一队神枪狙击手在等着他们…
