故事发生在三十年代的美国，随着经济和文化的蓬勃发展，一个名叫西力（伍迪·艾伦 Woody Allen 饰）的男人横空出现在了人们的面前。这个神奇的犹太人被发现混迹于各种各样相去甚远的交际圈里，不同阶级的，甚至是不同种族的，而每当他进入了一个新的环境中，他的身上就会迅速体现出这个环境的特征，有时是心理的同化，有时是生理的变异。

曼哈顿医院的精神科医生们对这个怪异的病人产生了浓厚的兴趣，普罗大众亦然，他们亲切的称西力为“变色龙”，一大批以他为主题的文化和商品应运而生，一时间，西力成为了这个时代最炙手可热的巨星。可是，真正将西力当做一个病人来关心的只有尤朵拉医生（米亚·法罗 Mia Farrow 饰），年轻又执着的她致力于治愈他的疾病。长此以往，西力和尤朵拉之间建立了深厚而又真诚的感情，这对立场特殊的爱人能否终成眷属呢？

导演伍迪?艾伦自导自演，以伪文献伪记录的方式，生动又真实的重现了本为虚构的西力的一生。
