故事开始于1923年加利福尼亚的的瓜达洛普大沙漠，传奇导演Cecile B. DeMille正在拍摄一部名为《十诫》的无声史诗电影。这部电影是根据DeMille自己的想法来拍摄的，这和33年后（1956年）DeMille再次拍摄的Charlton Heston主演的著名版本完全不同。但是片场频繁出现的离奇死亡事件，让DeMille烦恼不已－－更令人感到恐怖的是，这些人的死因和死状很像是传说中的古埃及死神阿努比斯（Anubis）所为。最终，电影摄制完成，但是谁也不知道，片场所使用的古埃及遗物唤醒了邪恶的魔灵。DeMille命人将多余的道具掩埋到黄沙之下……
80多年过去了，从伊拉克战场上退役的老兵Mark协助年迈的祖父来到当年的电影拍摄地，Mark的祖父希望能挖掘出自己孩童时代亲手埋下的遗物。与此同时，Alice Carter博士带着一群学生来到沙漠腹地探险，他们的目的也是寻找DeMille的遗物。Mark和祖父很快加入了Alice的队伍。不用说，Alice和Mark很快擦出了火花。但是随着Alice的准未婚夫、善于玩弄女性的Jesse Carter博士的出现，几个人的关系变得复杂起来。
不久，Mark和祖父找到了精确的发掘地点，而当年那个类似于阿努比斯的恶魔也重新出现，疯狂地开始杀戮。它能将双手所触及到的生命变成黄沙，并释放出毒蝎、毒蛇，或者制造一个外观类似于眼睛蛇的巨型沙暴。
在寻找真相的过程中，Mark和Alice还遇到了一位古怪的英国老人和一位整天抱怨屁股上长了虱子的讨厌农夫。
