本片根据诺贝尔文学奖得主马丁·尼索的作品改编，描述19世纪末，瑞典老农拉斯卡森带着他惟一的小儿子佩尔移民丹麦，追求他们心中的理想王国。可惜他们惟一能够找到的工作，是在石头农庄当马廊工人，晚上还只能睡在茅草堆上与马匹为伍，受尽凌辱的父子见证了庄园里种种的黑暗和罪恶。庄园里的长工埃里克领导工人们起来反抗管家的暴政，后因一次事故导致痴呆残废，佩尔为其勇敢精神所鼓舞，决定离开庄园，继承埃里克要征服世界的愿望。
原著是丹麦家喻户晓的名著，本片作了一定程度的修改，去除原作中的伤感成分和嘲讽精神，使之过于正规中庸，欠缺起落转折的层次感；不过导演透过小佩尔的眼睛和成长经历，向观众展现了以农庄为代表的封建社会统治阶层的残酷和以长工为代表的劳动人民的觉醒。除了其内容丰富以外，摄影师所塑造的雄壮优美的影像功不可没。演员造型与演技均逼真自然，小佩尔尤其出色。本片曾获戛纳最佳影片奖、奥斯卡最佳外语片奖、及欧洲电影奖的最佳影片。
