本片从所有的家长的共同噩梦开始：由于双亲工作繁忙，一个独自留在家里的小女孩惨遭色魔奸杀。女孩的父亲马利诺夫斯基是警察，母亲是麻醉医师。主要嫌犯埃克曼是一个相貌堂堂的心理变态男子，他起初认罪，后来又翻供，但法庭仍根据他的供词，在缺乏任何物证的情况下判处他30年的徒刑。一天，马利诺夫斯基接到埃克曼的一封信，后者再次声明他无辜。马利诺夫斯基这一次没有撕毁信，他把此案和一名连续杀害小孩的凶手被捕的案子对比，他的女儿遇害时，这个杀人凶手也在这个地区内，他决定对这个新的线索展开调查，但这却引起周围的人的不理解。
