与丈夫（安东尼·拉帕格利亚饰）庆祝完结婚25周年后不久，丈夫出差在外，达西（琼·艾伦）在车库找电池，却无意中发现丈夫就是新闻中说的“臭名昭著的连环杀手比蒂”。

影片的小说蓝本是金2010年出版的短篇小说集《暗夜无星》（Full Dark, No Stars）中的一篇。金在接受采访时说，小说的灵感来自于2005年被捕的美国“BTK连环杀手”丹尼斯·雷德（Dennis Rader），他就有一位结婚三十四年的妻子宝拉（Paula），对他的杀人行为毫不知情。金表示，小说探讨的是，人与人之间永远不可能完全了解，即使是最爱的人也一样。
