杰里迈亚在退伍后对城市生活产生了厌倦，遂到荒山野岭中过着一种野蛮人的狩猎生活。严寒的冬季，当他遭遇危险时，老猎人“熊爪”搭救了他。一年后，他遇到了一个疯女人，除了她和她的儿子，其余的家人都被印第安人杀害。杰里迈亚收留了疯女人的儿子。后来，他又救起了德尔·古。后者被印第安的黑足部落活埋，多亏了杰里迈亚，才捡回一条命。他们成了知己。在杰里迈亚的帮助下，印第安的“傻瓜”部落打败了“黑足”部落，由此杰里迈亚被“傻瓜”部落奉为英雄，他还同酋长的女儿“天鹅”结为夫妻。一次，在执行带路的任务时，为抄近路，杰里迈亚从“秃鹰”部落的圣地墓场穿过，这招致了“秃鹰”部落的报复——将杰里迈亚的妻子和养子杀死。愤怒的杰里迈亚大开杀戒，同“秃鹰”部落的人展开了激烈的搏斗。最终，杰里迈亚同“傻瓜”部落的人告别，离开了他生活了一段时间的大山。
